My quick answer is Yes, and No.
There are simply just sooo many amazing elopement wedding locations so it’s hard to pick one. Matterhorn IS very special and just being there makes you feel so grateful and fortunate.
Are you dreaming of being alone in this mythical place? It could be possible. If you want to elope at this very spot it’s advisable to do it at sunrise as a lot of the time you can be alone or almost alone there, the crowds are still sleeping (daytime this spot is packed!). You increase your chances of being totally alone by picking a date in the middle of the week off or mid season. When we were there in end of August, there was one more photographer that had slept in a tent and also wanted to capture the first rays of sunlight in the morning. The timing and the place is truly magical and you will most likely have the intimate experience that you are looking for.
At this very spot would be advisable to be just the two of you or just the very nearest. If you want a bigger wedding I have other spots to suggest where the flora is not so sensitive.
To be able to do the ceremony around sunrise you will have to stay in the Auberge that is very close (or in a tent if you prefer). You can easily get ready there and it’s just a 10 minutes walk from there. To come to the Auberge it’s around 30 min hike from the top of the cabin but you can of course choose to do a much longer hike than that. It’s all up to what you want to do.
The Auberge can also arrange with a wedding breakfast in nature or an evening wedding dinner according to your wish (with the limitations that you have being up on the mountain of course)
There are many beautiful trails and spots to get married and get amazing photography in Zermatt. I tend to prefer this one for the reasons above and also because the sun is rising just behind. The reflections in the lake makes the photos and the moment extra cool. Perhaps it would be even possible to bring an inflatable boat to reach that amazing rock in the middle? For the most adventurous couple that is.
